the brief

AV Optics created a product designed to repair damaged fibre optic cables, that operated up to 10 times quicker than competitive products. The product comprises an ‘oven’ that clamps and cures the terminals which are powered by a ‘control unit’. Lamb Industries was approached to create an industrial design for the device’s enclosures.

the design

Lamb Industries completely reconfigured the ergonomics and aesthetics of the device to create a design that is considerably less costly, quicker and easier to manufacture, and much safer and more comfortable in use.

Using our knowledge of high-temperature plastics we designed a compact enclosure that is easy to handle with a quick change grip system for different fibre optic terminals. This replaced the previous design which was machined from solid aluminium. We also developed an optional pistol grip which gives more assembly options and can also mount to any tripod.

AV Optics' customers were quick to realise the benefits of the new design with Airbus offering a special commendation.
